The sugar-phosphate backbone provides homogeneity to nucleic acid chains as all nucleotides share the same pentose (deoxyribose or ribose) and phosphate structure. However, it's the nitrogenous bases that give heterogeneity and are responsible for the highly diverse and heterogeneous genetic coding, as they differ among nucleotides and carry the information for protein production.
