Explain main features of social, economic and political life as reflected in the Rig-Veda.

Answer Posted / Nitesh Kumar Verma

The Rigveda provides valuable insights into the social, economic, and political life of ancient India during the Vedic period (approximately 1500-1000 BCE).nSocially, the Rigveda describes a hierarchical society divided into four main varnas or castes: Brahmins (priests), Kshatriyas (warriors and rulers), Vaishyas (merchants and farmers), and Shudras (laborers). Each caste had specific duties and responsibilities. The Rigveda also highlights the importance of family and lineage, with extended families living together in joint households.nEconomically, the Rigveda suggests a pastoral and agricultural economy based on cattle-rearing, agriculture, and trade. There is evidence of land ownership, gifts to priests, and the practice of barter and trade. The Rigveda also mentions the presence of merchants who traveled long distances for trade.nPolitically, the Rigveda describes a decentralized system of small kingdoms ruled by kings (rajas) or chieftains. Warfare was common between these kingdoms, and the Rigveda contains numerous hymns dedicated to gods associated with war and victory.
