During the Mauryan period, the state played a significant role in regulating economic activities. The emperor was responsible for maintaining the agricultural system and ensuring that sufficient food was produced to support the population. He also controlled trade and commerce through a network of markets, known as mandis, which were overseen by government officials. Taxes were collected from traders and merchants, and goods such as gold, silver, and textiles were stored in royal treasuries. The state also regulated industries such as mining and manufacturing.
