Bituminous coal (coal) or oil is usually used as a source material for the preparation of bit salt. During the process, the hydrocarbons from the coal or oil are pyrolyzed to produce a mixture of gases, including hydrogen and carbon monoxide. These gases react with sodium metal in a process known as the Kolbe-Schmitt reaction to form sodium salts, including sodium chloride (bit salt).
