Selective attention is the ability to focus on a specific aspect of an environment while ignoring other irrelevant stimuli. In psychology, it can be studied through experiments measuring reaction times, perception accuracy, or brain activity. Neurophysiologically, selective attention involves activation and inhibition of different brain areas and neural pathways. For example, in the visual system, attention enhances activity in certain regions while suppressing activity in others to facilitate focused processing. This process is thought to be mediated by top-down mechanisms from higher cortical areas that modulate sensory processing in lower areas.
