Describe the Minimum Description Length framework, and how
it relates to Occam's razor?
Answer Posted / Chandra Prakash Rawat
The Minimum Description Length (MDL) is a principle used in model selection for estimating the best model for a given dataset. It aims to find the simplest model that adequately explains the data without overfitting or underfitting. MDL is related to Occam's Razor, which states that the explanation of any phenomenon should be as simple as possible, but no simpler. In MDL terms, this translates into finding the shortest possible description of the data, where the length is a combination of the model complexity and the data compression obtained by using the model.
