Describe the two major pathways in the visual system of the
primate. Why are there so many visual cortical areas?

Answer Posted / Uttam Kumar Singh

The two major pathways in the primate visual system are the ventral (or 'what') stream and the dorsal (or 'where') stream. The ventral stream is involved in object recognition, while the dorsal stream is responsible for spatial awareness and eye movements. There are many visual cortical areas because each area specializes in processing a specific aspect of visual information, creating a hierarchical representation that allows for increasingly complex perceptions.
