Describe the integrate-and-fire model of individual
neurons?
Answer Posted / Gaurav Singhal
The Integrate-and-Fire (IAF) model is a mathematical abstraction of how an individual neuron functions. It simplifies the complex biophysical process by describing a neuron as a passive integrator, where the membrane potential is calculated by summing all incoming synaptic inputs and subtracting a leakage current that models the resting membrane potential. Once the membrane potential reaches a threshold (spiking threshold), it 'fires', resetting the membrane potential to its resting value. After firing, a neuron typically has a refractory period during which it cannot fire again.
