The Hodgkin-Huxley model is a mathematical description of the ionic mechanisms underlying the generation and propagation of action potentials in squid giant axons. It involves four types of ionic channels: voltage-gated sodium (Nav), potassium (K), leakage, and calcium (Ca). The model accounts for the activation and inactivation kinetics of Nav and K channels, as well as their single-channel conductance. It explains how changes in membrane potential lead to the opening and closing of these channels, causing an influx of sodium ions during the action potential's depolarization phase and a subsequent outflow of potassium ions during repolarization.
