The IP helper-address command is used in a Cisco switch for configuring the IP address of a router that acts as a default gateway for subnets connected to interfaces other than the one that connects to the router. It allows devices on these subnets to communicate with other networks by forwarding IP packets to the specified helper-address router. It is necessary to put this command when you want to enable routing between VLANs or when a device in one of these subnets needs to reach a network that isn't directly connected to any interface on the switch. If you don't need this functionality, it is not necessary to put this command.
