The cytoskeleton is a complex network of fibers that provides shape, structure, and support to cells. The three main components of the cytoskeleton are microtubules, intermediate filaments, and actin microfilaments. Microtubules are hollow tubes composed of tubulin subunits, providing structural support, movement of organelles within cells, and formation of mitotic spindle fibers during cell division. Intermediate filaments provide mechanical strength to cells and maintain the integrity of the plasma membrane. Actin microfilaments are responsible for cell motility, cytoplasmic streaming, and muscle contraction.
