What are the primary and the secondary constrictions of a chromosome? What is the other name given to the secondary constriction?

Answer Posted / Abhinov Nigam

The primary constriction, also known as the centromere, is a narrow region of the chromatid where sister chromatids remain connected during cell division. The secondary constriction, or the satellite, is a smaller constriction adjacent to the centromere. In some species, it may have a distinct banding pattern and is sometimes referred to as the secondary constriction. The satellite can be involved in chromosome pairing and segregation.
