How does the plant cell wall react when it is placed under hypotonic medium?

Answer Posted / Krishan Kumar Goyal

When a plant cell is placed in a hypotonic medium, the water molecules tend to move from the surrounding environment into the cell due to osmosis because the solution outside the cell has less solute concentration than inside. This causes the cell to swell and the pressure builds up until the turgor pressure equilibrium is reached. The plant cell wall, which provides rigidity, prevents the cell from bursting.
