The chromosome region containing the centromere is called the Centromeric Region. Chromosomes can be classified as either metacentric, submetacentric, acrocentric, or telocentric based on the location of their centromeres: Metacentric (equidistant from both ends), Submetacentric (closer to one end), Acrocentric (closest to one end), and Telocentric (one arm very short or absent).
