Plants obtain carbon primarily through photosynthesis, a process that converts carbon dioxide (CO2) and water into glucose (a type of sugar) and oxygen. During this process, plants take in CO2 from the atmosphere, allowing them to fix carbon. When plants die, carbon is returned to the soil as decomposable organic matter. Over time, microorganisms in the soil break down plant material, releasing carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere, completing the carbon cycle.
