In cats yellow is due to gene B and black to its allele b.
These genes are located on the X chromosome (sex-linked).
The heterozygous results in calico (tortoise shell). What
kinds of offspring (sex & color) are expected from the
cross: black male & calico female? Most calico males are
sterile, why?

In this cross, a black male and a calico female will produce only male offspring because the X chromosome carrying the yellow gene (B or b) is passed intact from the mother to her offspring. Since the father is homozygous for black (bb), all offspring will be male and black. Calico males are sterile due to a phenomenon called Lyonization, where one of the X chromosomes becomes inactive during development, leaving calico males with only one active X chromosome which does not provide enough genetic material for fertility.
