A homologue is a gene or protein that has evolved from a common ancestor, sharing similar structure and function. Homologues can be classified into orthologs (homologous genes in different species that descended from a common ancestral gene through speciation) and paralogs (homologous genes in the same organism that arise due to duplication events).
