What is a DNA array?

Answer Posted / Chandra Mohan Singh

A DNA array, also known as a DNA microarray, is a high-throughput technology used for measuring the expression levels of thousands of genes simultaneously. The DNA array consists of a glass or nylon slide with hundreds to tens of thousands of small spots, each containing a specific DNA probe (either cDNA or oligonucleotides). RNA from the sample is labeled with a fluorescent dye and hybridized to the DNA array. The intensity of the fluorescence in each spot reflects the expression level of the corresponding gene.
