Lunar module:-The current American programme for manned exploration of the moon is known as the Apollo project. An Apollo spacecraft consists of three main components the command module, the service module and the lunar module. The first two constitute the mother-ship which remains in lunar orbit while the third is separated from the mother ship to land on the lunar surface. The command module houses the astronauts and the service module contains the equipment an supplies. At the time of landing, the astronauts crawl through a tunnel from the mother ship onto to lunar module. Now they power up the lunar module’s system, then loosen the latches which attach the lunar module to the mother-ship and finally the latter is separated from the former
Next the lunar module engines are started which moves it out of the moon orbit for the descent to the lunar surface.
