How do you connect the capacitors on polyphase circuits?
Answer Posted / h r rajyaguru
In three phase load the capacitor bank is connected for improving the power factor (P F). The rating (KVA and V) of the bank can be calculated depending on the existing system voltage and up to which P F we intend to improve. The ideal location of this Capacitor Bank is near to the load. For large size motor / load separate circuit breakers are to be used for switching the said Capacitor Bank. The motor and the bank are to be closed / opened simultaneously. Some times Capacitor Banks are connected with the Motor Control Center (MCC) or Power Control Center (PCC) for improving the P F of the system. The voltage rating shall be 10% higher than the system voltage.
