this is a condition which is known as methemoglobinemia.it is caused due to ingestion of large amounts of nitrates in water by an infant. these nitrates are converted into nitrite by the digestive system.The nitrite then reacts with oxyhemoglobin to form metheglobin, consequently the body tissues may be deprived of oxygen causing the infant to develop a blue coloration of their mucous membranes.
