Melittopalynology is the study of pollen content in honey,
which will indicate the flowers of various plant species
the bees had visited. Unifloral honeys contain pollen
predominantly of one species and such honeys have some
attributed therapeutic benefits. Because of this, bee
keepers grow only one species and maintain bee colonies in
the midst of them. Multifloral honeys contain pollen from
several different species which the bees had visited, and
this would indicate the species in the environment.
Besides helping in characterizing honeys and determining
their therapeutic benefits, melittopalynological studies
are useful in environmental assessment studies, as they
reflect the species in a particular environemnt and the
duration and quantum of pollen production. C Kameswara Rao
