why are not used methonol in kf titrator to find out water
content in ketones?
Answer Posted / jagadeeshchandra
Generally methanol is not used as a solvent for carbonyl
compounds.Usage of methanol for ketones will produce ketals
and water which gives false result. And aldehydes gives acetals
and water.
pyridine can be used in place of methanol.Halogenated
alcohols, long chain alcohols,Dimethyl formamide can also be
used.
Another thing methanol is reaction part.It forms methyl
sulphite with kf reagent.Whare base will acts as a buffering
agent.
