Why is the RBC called as a cell even though it dont have all
the characteristic features of a complete cell?
Answer Posted / soumyendu(jeet) ghosh
We know cells are the smallest structural and functional units of life having a mass of protoplasm and surrounded by plasma membrane.
As far as RBCs are concerned,
1)They are the most essential component of blood in the vertibrates, thus acts as a major structural unit of life.
2) They are the transporting agent in the body, circulating respiratory gases, enzymes, metabolites, hormones and other secretory and excretory substances throughout the body. Without their help, circulation would'nt have happened, following the malfunctioning of any other systems in the body.
They also help in maintaining a stable body temperature and environment.
3) As far as their structure is concerned, they do a plasma membrane bound protoplasmic mass containing Fe pigments.
They do have receptors that helps them bind with substances they transport.
Although, they are very specialized non-nucleated cells which aren't able to replicate themselves,in the first stages they also have ribosomes and mRNA and they have a metabolic activity (glycolytic activity).
So for all these reasons the RBC may well be considered as a cell even though it dont have all
the characteristic features of a complete cell.
