Do the plant, calotropis procera have an anticonvulsant
activity?
Answer Posted / dilpreet singh
The present study investigated anticonvulsant activity in herbs. It was studied that different root extracts of the Calotropis pricorea (Apocynaceae) on rats were effective against seizures to evaluate the traditional use of the herb. Different types of seizures were induced like maximal electro shock seizures (MES), Pentylenetetrazol (PTZ) seizures, lithium-pilocarpine and electrical kindling seizures. In both tests choloform as well as alcohol extracts were used which showed the most significant effect. Aqueous extract was found to be more significant. In these tests herb shows its anticonvulsant activity by delaying the onset of convulsions as compared to control. The results of this study indicate that the chloroform extract and aqueous extract of Calotropis procera roots may be beneficial in the absence (petitmal) and tonic-clonic (grand mal) type of seizures
