Mercury thermometer is constructed as shown in Figure
The capillary tube has a diameter of 0.004 cm, and the bulb
has a diameter of 0.250 cm.
neglecting the expansion of the glass, find the change in
height of the mercury column
that occurs with a temperature change of 30.0 °C.
Answer Posted / kelvin
Taking the coefficient of expansion of mercury to be 1/5500 per Kelvin.
The volume of mercury (in the bore) = (4/3)(pi)(D/2)^3
=8.18 E-9 metercube (8.18 millimeter cube)
Change in Volume = Coefficient of expansion X Volume X Change is temperature
= (1/5500)(8.18E-9)(30)
= 4.46E-11 metercube
Change in Volume = Change in Height X Cross-section Area of capillary tube
Hence Change in Height = Cross-Section / Change in Volume
= (pi){d/2)^2 / 4.46E-11
=0.0355 meters (about 3.55cm)
