whhat is the chemical composition of fehling's reagent?
Answer Posted / debjit dutta
The composition of fehling's reagent are :
copper sulphate-CuSO4 [fehling A], sodium or potassium
hydroxide-NAOH or KOH and Potassium sodium tartarate {KNa
(C4H4O6).4H2O} [fehling B], also called Rochelle salt.
Here in the fehling test, the copper from CUSO4 in the
reactant is reduced from +II state to +I state by the
aldehyde, and that aldehyde is oxidised to its
corresponding carboxylic acid.
The copper in the product is changed to CU2O which is red
ppt. in nature, giving positive fehling test. But ketones
are resistant to fehling test.
