What does it mean to say that an allele is pleiotropic?
Answer Posted / baba_mailme
The multiple effect of a gene is called pleiotropy, and a
gene having multiple effect is called a pleiotropic gene.
In other words a gene that influences more than one trait
is known as pleiotropic gene.
for example, in humans the gene that causes an inborn
disease PHENYLKETONURIA in homozygous recessive stste is
pleiotropic. Its major effect is accumulation of the amino
acid PHENYLALANINE in the tissues that damages the brain
and causes the disease. its secondary effects includes
short stature, excessive sweating, non pigmented hairs and
eyes, pigmented patches on the skin, widely spaced
incisiors.
