The battery in a (gasoline powered) car stores the power needed to start the car, and to power electrical accesories when the engine is not running. Once the engine is started, the electrical load is mostly covered by the cars generator or alternator system. In theory, one could disconnect the battery of a running car and not notice any difference. However, the modern car has computers and sensitive electronics which may be at risk without the stabilizing effect of the battery.
