One train leaves Los Angeles at 15mph heading for New York.
Another train leaves from New York at 20mph heading for Los
Angeles on the same track. If a bird, flying at 25mph,
leaves from Los Angeles at the same time as the train and
flies back and forth between the two trains until they
collide, how far will the bird have traveled?

idiots trying to provide "cool" sounding and apparently complicated, though senseless answers.
firstly, the bird travels faster than both trains, so the bird will at least make one u turn. this is for the dude who said above that the bird will make only one way trip.
For the answer:
The trains are travelling in opposite directions, so consider one train stationary and the other one will appear moving at 15 + 20 = 35 miles/hr.
Bird is moving at 25 miles/hr.
Given the info that the bird will keep flying till the crash happens the ratio of the speeds of the train in motion and the bird's speed is equal to the ratio of the distance travelled by them.
So 35 (trains speed) / 25 (birds speed) = X (distance between LA & NY) / Y (Distance travelled by train.
So Y = (25/35)*X = 0.714 X where X is unknown in the problem statement
Now shut up everyone.
