The ends of the cut have an overhanging piece of single-
stranded DNA.

These are called "sticky ends" because they are able to
base pair with any DNA molecule containing the
complementary sticky end.
they r formed by restriction digestion using few restriction
enzymes
blunt ends can be be changed to sticky ends by addition of a
polylinker followed by restriction digestion
