Explain the Characteristics of Xerophytes ?

1. These plants have thick layer of cuticles which prevents
excessive evaporation

2. These plants have a long tap root which go deep in soil
to absorb moisture from soil. To retain water, become fleshy
with plenty of moisture e.g. in Asparagus

3. Stem of these plants is thick and hard. Thick cuticle is
present to prevent loss of water by transpiration. In
Euphorbia stem is reduced in size but it is provide with thorns

4. Leaves of Xerophytic plants are fleshy containing and
aqueons tissue. These leaves may modified onto spines e.g.
in cacti. Eupjorbia. In asparagus leaves are reduced to
small scales only. Cuticle on the leaves is well developed
to check the water loss

Some common Xerophytic are euphorbia, cacti, Indian aloe,
prickly poppy, asparagus, acacia etc.
