Three types of match sticks differing in the composition of
the match heads are found
(1)Friction matches:-These are also known as strike any
where or Lucifer matches
(2)Safty friction matches

(1)Friction matches:-Firstly the sticks are dipped in
combustible substance as molten sulphur or paraffin. Then it
is dipped at extreme tip into paste which is made of
following constituents
a) Readily combustible like, antimony trisulphide
b) A kindling material, which is white phosphorus
c) An oxidising agent as potassium chlorate
d) Check or glass powder as inert substance
e) A binding material as glue
When the paste has dried on the tip of match stick, the tip
is coated with a very thin layer of wax as a protecting agent
On the side of box a mixture of sand glue is pasted. When
the head of match is strike against the kinding substance at
once catches fire due to heat produced by friction. The
oxidising agent supplies the necessary oxygen during this
reaction
Safty friction Matches:-Workers working in these factories
generally suffered from disease known as phossy-jaw which
results in decay of law bones. While phosphorus is chief
cause of results in decay of law bones. White phosphorus is
chief cause of this disease. So in these matches. While
phosphorus is replaced by scarlet phosphorus as binding
material, and rest of composition is same as that of
Friction Matches
Safty Matches:-In these matches, low kindling substance is
absent, while rest of composition is same. These sticks must
be rub against special composition pasted on the side of the
box. This consist of red phosphorus 9 parts, FeS2 powder 7
parts, glass 3 parts and glue 1 part. When match stick is
rubbed against this specially prepared surface, the friction
then carried a trace of red phosphorus to be ignited
locally. The tiny spark glass causes antimony sulpher then
sulpher then sulpher and finally the match stick to catch fire
