What is Salts ?

Answer Posted / guest

A compound whose aqueous solution contains a+ ve ion other
that H+ and a ?ve ion other than OH- is known as salt.

Salts are classified as follows:

(a) Normal salts :- These contain neither replaceable
hydroxyl groups and these are obtained by complete
neutralization of a base by an acid. e.g. Nacl, Na2so4,
Kno3, etc.

(b) Acid Salt :- Salt which contains some replaceable
hydrogen are known as acid salts e.g. NaHSO4.

(c) Basic Salts:- Salts which contains replacement hydroxyl
groups are called basic salts. these are obtained by an
incomplete neutralization of a base.

(d) Mixed salts:- Salts which contain two distinct cations
or quoins other than hydrogen or hydroxyl group are mixed salts.

Properties of salts:-

1.Salt are odourless, non-volatile

2.These are electrovalent compounds which ionize in solution

3.Salt of weak acids or weak bases undergo hydrolysis

4.Their solution may be neutral, acidic or basic towards
litmus due to hydrolysis
