what is the difference between earth and neutral?

Answer Posted / parvinder

Most interesting answers, with a lot of thought. However,
one needs to consider how the two earthing systems needs to
be designed into a more practical situations. Which of the
two will provide the return current? and in what practical
scenario. For example, 25kV, 50Hz overhead train traction
system close to 750V dc train traction system. The answer
really is in treating the dc system as a battery
arrangement (+ and - arrangement), that is no earth or
neutral points, but the dc output is a rectified output
from an ac source, where the earthing requirements are
placed, based on TT, TN-S, TN-C-S, etc. arrangements at the
substation end where the railway operators interface with
the distribution network operators (electricity
distributers) this where the requirements on the
distinction between neutral and earth are essential). Other
areas are electrolytic processes such as
electroprocessing , electrochemical and other dc
processes, where ac source is converted into a dc source
for processing. How does one differentiate between the
purpose of neutral and earth.
