What is the difference between hard and soft water ?

The water which dissolves soap and easily forms lather with
it, is called soft water ; and the water which produces no
lather will soap is called hard water. In hard water lather
is not formed because of the presence of magnesium and
calcium bicarbonates, chlorides and sulphates.
