Why is the apparent altitude of a star increased by
reflection in atmosphere ?
Answer Posted / sanju
The atmosphere is present upon about 200 miles above the
surface of the earth. The density of the lower layer is
greater, because it is compressed by the weight of the
layers above it. Hence it gradually increases as we move
downwards. When a ray from a star enters the atmosphere and
travels downwards, it passes from the rare to denser layers
and so bends towards the normal more and more. Finally, it
enters the eye and appears to come from the farther distance.
