what is the difference between aquisitions and mergers?

acquisition means when one company take over another
company's assets and shares.so they can have a decision
power of that company and aquired company has also existance
after take over.
and merger means when 2 company merge with each other and
the result of the joint venture is a form of new 3rd company.
