Question { Salam, 3969 }

how to calculate the quantity of steel used for construction..

Answer

Normally the steel used for the construction is calculated from the bending schedule provided with the structural drawings. if not, than it will have to be measured from the drawings. for each and every members.
Eg: If a beam of 6m long and uses 6nos 16mm reinforcement then it will be
6x6= 36m x 1.58(weight of a 16mm bar/ 1m length)= 56.80kg

if the beam is continuous than we will have to add up laps (normaly 50 x the diameter of steel).

Question { 7647 }

Column is a compression member, concrete is strong in compression..then what is the reason to the column reinforcement..?

Answer

It is true that a column is a compression member but it has to be designed in such a way to withstand the imposed load.

If you want the column to carry the imposed load without any reinforcement, then it will have to be of a much larger size than you see the columns around. This will create a reduction in the floor area.
therefore the reinforcements are used to minimize the size of the column in order to get the maximum space around.

calculate for per 100 qube feet (qubic feet wise)

Answer

example using m3 for 100m3

1:2:3 for 100 m3
1+2+3= 6
cement: 1/6*100 = 16.67 m3
Sand: 2/6*100 = 33.33 m3
Aggregates: 3/6*100= 50 m3

therefore cement =16.67*1600(density of OPC)
= 26672kg/50=534bags)
sand = 33.33* 1400 (density of sand)
=46662kg/1000= 46.66tons
Aggregates= 50*1200 (density of aggregates)
=60000kg/1000= 60 tons

now add 40% for shrinkage
cement 534*40%= 213.6 TOTAL= 214+534= 748 bags
sand= 46.66*40%= 18.664 TOTAL= 46.66+18.66= 65.32tons
Aggregates= 60*40%= 24 TOTAL 24+60=84 tons
