your network... but new switches have ability to uplink
without any specific port...

Uplink port is used to connect two switches with Cross/straight cable.
Actually today a Cat5e/Cat6 cable straight cable has ability to perform cross cable function.

Uplink port is used to connect two switches/hubs with cross cable.
If you are connecting an uplink port with a normal switch port then you use straight cable
