In Internet Explorer, you can disable ActiveX controls by going to Tools > Internet Options > Security > Custom Level, scrolling down to 'ActiveX Controls and Plug-ins', setting 'Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe for initializing' to 'Disable', and clicking OK.
