The kill() system call can return several values, depending on whether the process is running and if it could be terminated. If the process does not exist or if it cannot be found, it returns -1. Successful termination of a process returns 0. Other possible return values include EACCES (access denied), EPERM (operation not permitted), ESRCH (no such process), and ETXTBSY (text file busy).
