Location Update is a process in GSM networks where a mobile device informs the network about its current LA and cell ID whenever it moves to a new location area or cell. This helps the network to keep track of the device's location for call routing, paging, billing, and other purposes. We need location updates to maintain connectivity with the mobile device during its movement and to ensure efficient use of network resources.
