LOD is the loss during drying of sample as per prescribed
conditions which gives loss (presence) of all evaporating
solvents along with water.It is the dry base.
While water content gives the moisture present in the
sample only.It is unhydrous base.

As per USP monograph, Water determination <921>, many
Pharmaceutical substances are either hydrates or contain
water in adsorbed form. As a result, the determination of
the water content is important in demonstrating compliance
with the regulatory standards.
Different methods are used to determine the water content
depending upon the nature of the article or prescribed in
the monographs.
As per USP monograph, Loss on drying <731> is used in those
cases where the loss sustained on heating may be not
entirely water. For substances appearing to contain water
as the only volatile constituent, the procedure given in
the chapter Water determination <921>.
