Contractures are caused by a variety of factors, including prolonged immobilization, burns, chronic diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis or muscular dystrophy, and genetic conditions. They occur when the muscle becomes shortened and the tissue surrounding it becomes tight, resulting in limited movement.
