The father of statistics is considered to be Blaise Pascal (1623-1662), a French mathematician and philosopher. However, the formal study of statistics can be traced back to John Graunt's work on demographic data analysis in the late 17th century. The early uses of statistics included population studies, life expectancy calculations, insurance underwriting, and military planning.
