Why we provide chair for slab reinforcement? How to place chair distributors to distributors or top distributors to bottom main?

Generally , chairs bars is provided in rcc raft foundation and also in rcc slab for keeping distance(separation) b/w bottom reinforcement mesh and top reinforcement mesh. we can say that its is supportive nature and also maintain spacing. and hold the upper reinforcement and resist the compressive stress. minimum dia. of chair bar is 10/12mm. Thanks
