during lightening very high voltage passes through the tallest surfaces above ground level,buildings etc ,so in order to protect the appliances ,from damage, a surge arester is placed,it is nothing but a small rod placed on the peak of building ,when heavy currents flow through the aresters they flow the currents to earth,
