what is nis server

Answer Posted / bhuvan

NIS allows a central server to manage password
authentication, host, services, etc which would normally be
provided by the local
files /etc/passwd, /etc/shadow, /etc/groups, /etc/hosts, /et
c/services, /etc/networks, /etc/rpc, /etc/protocols, /etc/al
iases (sendmail), ...

NIS provides a means to central administration of the
network users. When a user logs into a system using NIS, the
system first checks the local /etc/passwd file , if it
cannot find the user it will then check the NIS server.

NIS Client systems look to the NIS server to provide this
data.
The logical cluster of the server and clients are known as
an NIS "domain".
