On which side, taps are provided in tap changing
transformers and why?
Answer Posted / iamdon
Taps are provided on high voltage(HV) side in tap changing
transformers.
The reason behind this is that in a transformer, low
voltage windings are placed close to core so that
insulation requirement is less. The high voltage windings
are provided on outer layers. It is physcially easier to
putting taps and handling it from the windings which is
clearaly accessible. There are more number of turns on HV side
which makes it easier to obtain fine variation in voltages.
So the choice of HV windings for taps is justified.
